SERIES: Wikipedia for a VERY brief summary of the series, and the Project iM@S wiki for a more in-depth look at Yayoi herself. A list of anime episodes is here.
CANON POINT: Anime, Post-series
APPEARANCE: Safebooru link to official art!
PERSONALITY:
Yayoi is one of the ten idols at 765 Productions- and she is, in some ways, uniquely suited to being a J-pop idol. She's naturally sunny, infectiously optimistic, and ridiculously energetic (to the point where she has NO VOLUME CONTROL and has some trouble reining herself in). You literally have to WORK at bringing her down from her constant high- Yayoi is the type of person to bounce back from anything that life throws at her. She's USED to living a life of hard knocks; because Yayoi is the oldest of six children AND because her father can't hold down a job, her family is often hard-pressed to make ends meet. Often times, Yayoi has to skip a few meals for the sake of her brothers and her sister, and she just about always wears old baggy clothing and hand-me-downs; additionally, her whole family is made up of adept bargain sale hunters, and they're all quite aware that every single yen counts.
... these qualities are magnified about tenfold in Yayoi. She has something akin to tunnel vision when it comes to budgeting any money that comes her way; she'll look for the cheapest deals, and anything above that line is SUPER EXTRAVAGANT. Wasting ANY money whatsoever, even down to a ten yen difference in price or useless trinket, will throw her into a deep funk that'll take her days to recover from. Yayoi isn't above asking for loans, no matter how insignificant the amount may be (thirty-eight yen, along with a fervent promise to pay it back with twelve yen's worth of interest later)- and she'll even scrounge underneath vending machines for spare change, if it comes down to it. In the anime, she's usually the one worrying about the studio's finances on a more basic level (THEY MIGHT NOT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY FOR LUNCH!), and at home, Yayoi's specialty is, yes, making the best of the bean sprouts that they usually buy. BEAN SPROUT FESTIVAL, HELLS YEAH.
While Yayoi isn't particularly smart, she's extremely good-natured. She's a tirelessly hard worker who genuinely wants to be as helpful as she can; when her would-be producer went to tell her that she'd been among those chosen to debut as an idol, Yayoi was (of all things) washing the building's windows while she waited to hear back from the company. She also helps to take care of her siblings as best as she can- preparing meals, herding them around, and generally making sure they aren't wrecking the house. On the other hand, Yayoi is extremely naive and gullible; that, coupled with her lack of knowledge about the world in general AND the fact that she very rarely gets angry (and even then, only to her siblings), means that it's not particularly difficult to take advantage of her good nature to run circles around her.
As such, Yayoi didn't want to become an idol simply to earn money (though that's certainly a welcome benefit): her goal is simply to spread as much happiness and cheer to the world as she possibly can. When everything is said and done, Yayoi treasures her friends and values her family above all else. She's very much aware of her own failings, and occasionally has times where she falters, especially when her self-confidence takes more than its fair share of blows. The downside to this is that with all of her responsibilities and the fact that she's not the most naturally skilled idols (singing and dancing doesn't come as easily to her as, say, Miki), Yayoi really has to work about twice as hard as everyone else just to stay on top of things, and it's hard to please everyone. In one episode of the anime, Yayoi actually comes to loggerheads with the oldest of her youger brothers, Chousuke, due to his frustration over how (to him) it seems like Yayoi gets to have fun being an idol, even as she relies on Chousuke to help her out with taking care of her siblings. She's not the type of person to let any of this get in the way, however; Yayoi firmly believes that in the end, everything will turn out alright, ESPECIALLY if she just works a little harder.
Yayoi is actually pretty cognizant of her own strong points and shortcomings: she's not very good at a LOT of things, but she applies herself with (what she calls) 200% energy. While she's neither sharp-witted nor a quick learner, with the proper motivation, Yayoi is very much able to excel through guts, hard work, and sheer brute-strength effort. In Dearly Stars (which is played from a competing idol production company's point of view), Yayoi is nigh infamous for her monstrous stamina, allowing her to outlast just about anyone else during auditions or concerts; she can keep a full head of steam no matter HOW much work she has in front of her.
Yayoi's other strength lies in her positive outlook on life- for instance, it may be hard to live with so many cranky siblings, but her view on it is that life is just so much more enjoyable with such a big family! It's hard to make her sad or pensive. On the off chance that her mood is brought down low, she's relatively quick to recover from small things... unless you're actively bullying her (or are just that much of an insensitive douche). Yayoi's greatest fear is that she'll end up holding everyone back, no matter how hard she works, and in one episode, a rival idol group takes advantage of this by making an off-hand remark along these lines; that cut straight into her self-confidence, and it took all of her friends working together to get her back onto her feet
Yayoi's biggest problem is that she simply isn't very smart (as can be shown by her pretty horrible grades). She takes just about EVERYTHING at face value (and as literally as possible), and she assumes the best of every person, meaning that she'll believe most of what they say without question. Additionally, Yayoi isn't good at reining in her energy or the volume of her voice, basically making her the antithesis of every library in existence. Finally, she has a crippling fear of heights, and she's almost as cripplingly conscious of her finances at any one time (as mentioned above).
ABILITIES:
Nothing superhuman; she's pretty
POSSESSIONS:
Yayoi's clothes, her cellphone (on loan from 765 Productions), and Berochoro, the froggy pouch that she always hangs from around her neck.
>PERSONA
1) SUN - Joy, energy, and optimism; this is Yayoi in a nutshell. She's not particularly skilled at anything but being cheerful and she always tries to face forward- her idol career is basically staked on her boundless energy and enthusiasm.
2) STAR - Generosity, peace, and joy definitely define Yayoi as well. And she's certainly altruistic; she's a hard worker, and she'll sometimes work without getting anything in return.
3) STRENGTH - Perhaps Yayoi is a mixture of gentleness and courage (she's never one to shy away from hard work) AND her brute force way of just giving everything that she has without fearing the consequences.
SHADOW:
Perhaps somewhere deep inside her psyche (buried VERY deeply), Yayoi resents her lot in life. Why is SHE stuck taking care of her siblings? Why can't her parents get their acts together? Why does she have to give and give and give, and get so little in return for her efforts but low grades? It's entirely possible that Yayoi doesn't work so hard because she's a hard worker, but because she's fiercely competitive. Her fear of holding her friends back may be a desire not to be seen as their inferior. But when surrounded by girls who are smarter or more gifted than she is, or who have an easier time getting food and fashionable clothes, or who are taller and longer-legged and more attractive...
Perhaps somewhere deep inside is a Yayoi who is as bitterly angry as she normally is cheerful; if she can't get up to the level of her friends, then she'll tear them all down until they're eye to eye with her, where they'll see a Yayoi whose lively green eyes don't shine with joy, but burn with raw envy.
PERSONA:
Creating one for Yayoi!
FIREBIRD: Based on Russian folklore, where it represents the long sought-after payoff of a difficult quest (but may bring troubles of its own once it's acquired), rather than the Egyptian Phoenix used in Persona 4, Yayoi's version is a little smaller than your average mythological bird. In fact, it's downright adorable. Yayoi's Firebird is almost full support, focusing primarily on status healing, buffing, and radar skills.
RESISTANCES: Block FIRE, Weak ICE

THIRD PERSON SAMPLE:
It was her second trip into the TV World, and Yayoi was frozen with fear.
She couldn't help it- everything in this strange, foggy world had gone straight from eerie to terrifying when the strange, shadowy THINGS began attacking their group. It had been bad enough the first time around when she'd been forced to confront the strangest, darkest part of herself, but now- she'd never been in a battle before! Yayoi had fought with her siblings and her families, and she'd seen scuffles at school between classmates, but this- this was completely different.
These monsters wanted to see Yayoi and her friends dead.
"Hahwah-!!" Yayoi squeaked and recoiled as a monster started running toward her, but one of her friends had intercepted the attack, knocking the monster away with a baseball bat before jumping back into the fray. Her knees shaking, Yayoi cowered against the wall with her hands against her ears and, for the first time, looked at the fight taking place. She could barely tell what was going on- magic was flying every which way, and her friends weren't actually jumping AT the monsters, but only retaliating when the monsters attacked THEM- Yayoi recoiled again when a monster lashed out at her, but this, too, was knocked back by one of the defenders-
The pigtailed idol's eyes widened, and she felt like she'd just been gut-punched. They... they were protecting her, weren't they? They couldn't do anything but defend, because SHE couldn't move or dodge or anything; Yayoi's hands lowered, and she realized that her friends had been talking to her the whole time. Telling her not to be scared, that they got this, and- and-
Tears welled up in Yayoi's eyes. Could it be that she was the weakest link in the chain...!? She pushed off of the wall and took a few uneasy steps forward- one of her friends moved to stop her. 'Yayoi, you shouldn't push yourself.' 'Yayoi, you could get hurt!' 'Leave it to us, Yayoi!'
Yayoi shook her head, her pigtails whipping around. "N-No! Please- let me help, too! I mean... I...!"
She thought back to the thing that had been her Shadow- that thing that had been so full of hatred and envy- and how relieved it had been when she'd accepted it as part of herself. Sure, she was scared, just as she'd been scared back then. Back then, she'd had her friends to save her, but now-
"- I'm not alone anymore! And... and I'll try my best!" Yayoi took a deep breath and concentrated, feeling power flowing through her body. "PERSONA!!"
